A Dataset on Civil Society Organizations in International Human Rights Institution
Spring 2024
How does institutional design affect non-state actors' preference for regional and global organizations? This project investigates how institutional design influences non-state actors' (e.g., NGOs) choice between different international human rights organizations. Unlike prior research focusing on organizational activity, this project views non-state actors as strategic participants prioritizing benefits like binding decisions and faster resolutions. We compare two systems: the Inter-American System (potentially binding) and the UN system (non-binding). The project innovates by creating a unique dataset on participating civil society organizations, including location and expertise, to understand their choices and interactions with these institutions.
